Today, Virginia set new law for employee records, Seattle tops dog-friendly workplaces, and Nevada says a failed marijuana screening can’t rule out a job.
A new amendment, which requires employers to furnish employee records upon the employee’s request, is set to take effect on July 1, 2019. Under the law, an employee must turnover all records for an employee when the employee, or their attorney, request them in writing.
The Number: 30. Employers must turn over the personnel record to an employee within 30 days of the written request.
The Quote: “Employers in Virginia should also review current handbooks and policies and revise provisions that refer to employment files and records as the property of the employer as well as language that deem requests for records or files by the employee being at the employer’s sole discretion.”
A list of the top 20 dog-friendly workplaces was dominated by Seattle. That city had the highest concentration of dog-friendly workplaces on the list with four Seattle-based employers, including Amazon at the top of the list.
The Number: 2 million. There were 2 million pets insured in the US and Canada as of 2017.
The Quote: “Dogs are a social lubricant. When work teams are first formed, it often takes a while for people to get comfortable with each other, but having a dog in the room seems to put people more at ease.”
Nevada employers will be barred from refusing a candidate a job if they fail a test for marijuana. It’s the first state to pass such a law. The law goes into effect in 2020.
The Number: 2016. Nevada voters approved recreational marijuana use for adults 21 and over in 2016.
The Quote: “It is unlawful for any employer in this State to fail or refuse to hire a prospective employee because the prospective employee submitted to a screening test and the results of the screening test indicate the presence of marijuana.”
