In it Together: Leveling the Playing Field for America’s Small and Mid-Sized Businesses

As I reflect on all this community has accomplished the past two years, I am so proud of the team and vision that drives us forward: leveling the playing field for the 30+ million previously underserved small businesses in the United States.

February marks the start of a new fiscal year for Zenefits.  As we cast our product, service and market plans for the coming year, I want to first thank the smart, passionate and inspiring people we are #inittogether with: our customers, our employees and our partners. You are not just the backbone of our business, but the backbone of our entire American economy — 99.7% of all businesses in the United States are small businesses — and you are Zenefits’ inspiration.

As I reflect on all this community has accomplished the past two years, I am so proud of the team and vision that drives us forward: leveling the playing field for the 30+ million previously underserved small businesses in the United States. Together, we are helping to realize the best, most complete all-in-one HR, Payroll and Benefits platform built specifically for small and mid-sized businesses (those with up to 1,000 employees) and simplifying access to better healthcare and benefit options for employers and their employees.

Your Work Inspires Us

The kind of work our customers do inspires us. Among you are first-time entrepreneurs, turn-around artists, new market pioneers and those who tirelessly pour the best of themselves into nonprofits for social justice and positive change. You represent the new world of work, a new way of launching, running and growing diverse organizations that engage and energize its workforce as it serves its customers.

Here are a few examples:

  • First-time entrepreneurs, like Jodie Heal, who after 10 years and thousands of miles of commuting to a job as CPA far from her small town home in Maine, decided to open her own business. She now employs a team of nine and supports more than 300 aspiring small businesses—some on fairly isolated islands off the coast of Maine—to build profitable, sustainable and compliant organizations. Her work, facilitating small business growth on a recommended technology foundation, just earned her a spot as one of the top three female CPA’s in the state of Maine.
  • Non-profit organizations powering social justice, like Nashville’s Oasis Center (NOC), a center for at-risk youth.  A team of 100 employees and another 100 local volunteers help more than 3,500 local teens with everything from college prep to coping with homelessness, substance abuse and mental health issues. Shanda Hampton, the director of HR at NOC, ensures that they take good care of both the region’s youth and the team of caretakers that power their support programs.
  • Business transformers like Fireclay Tile’s Eric Edelson, who joined this 30-year-old tile manufacturer and helped architect its transformation into a successful “dirt to doorstep”  provider of design, sales and manufacturing. He’s grown the business from 30 to 130 team members and fuels the team’s sense of purpose as a certified B Corp to “…do well by doing good.”
