We are growing quickly and expanding our company into California. What are some things we need to think about when opening a business there?

Congrats! California is one of the largest economies in the world, so great to see your company growing.

California also has specific employment laws across a variety of issues, many of which go beyond other states and Federal requirements. For starters, I would read up on the state’s leave requirements, sick time requirements, regulations around hiring independent contractors, meal and rest breaks, and overtime requirements. Remember, these can vary pretty widely based on the city or county you’re based in.

Don’t forget to account for CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) which goes into effect January 1, 2020!
