When you’re interviewing a candidate for a job, you want to get to know them as well as possible. But there are some questions that get just a little too personal. Here are some questions that you cannot ask during an interview.

1. How old are you?

Asking this may seem fine, but it can come off as a loaded question. Showing interest in a candidate’s age may lead to issues with discrimination, so it’s best to simply ask if they are over 18.

2. Are you planning to have children?

Asking about a candidate’s personal life, such as marital status and kids, is illegal during an interview. On the other hand, you can ask if the candidate is available to work overtime and travel.

3. Do you have any disabilities or illnesses?

While this question may tell you if a candidate is unable to perform the job’s tasks, it’s important to instead ask if they will need any accommodations for the position.

4. What religion do you practice?

Religion is a very personal topic, and candidates may not be comfortable with the question. You can ask what days they’re available to work, or if they have any conflicts with the work schedule.

5. Where were you born?

Title VII and several state laws prohibit discrimination based on a candidate’s national origin. You can instead ask if the employee is legally authorized to work in the United States.

Ever wonder why you can’t ask them? The EEOC lays out guidelines as to why these questions are not permitted.
