In short, it’s getting exposed to “unknown unknowns.”
As United States Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld made famous, there are known knowns, known unknowns, and unknown unknowns. These unknown unknowns can be the trickiest — and most dangerous — of the bunch. Unknown unknowns are the things you don’t know that you don’t know…and when taken in the context of business risk, these could be situations that become disastrous if left unidentified as risk-causing.
