Any employee onboarding checklist should start with safety and training. You will want to ensure that proper safety measures are taken, by training your employee on this first. In some positions, OSHA requirements need to be taken into account. Be sure you have up to date requirements and the proper, working and undamaged gear required for your employee’s position. If your employee will be working with large amounts of cash, be sure to train them in robbery prevention. If chemicals are involved, be sure you have MSDS sheets on hand and the employee is trained thoroughly on how to use the chemicals. If you are in the healthcare field, train your employee on preventing the spread of pathogens.
Sexual Harassment Training
Sexual harassment is a big issue in the workplace and needs to be addressed from the get-go. Employees who are not trained properly may inadvertently get themselves into hot water with a joke or snide comment. Be sure to present sexual harassment as a zero tolerance policy, with the intention to set the highest standard of expectations. Let the employee know it is best to keep interactions highly professional with their colleagues both at work and during off hours.
Job Training and Employee Handbook Discussion
Be sure to give your employee adequate time to review the employee handbook— while they’re on the job. This resource contains vital information, but will likely go unread if the employee is expected to read it on their off hours. Set aside time to go over their questions with them and highlight any sections in the handbook that are particularly important. It’s also a good idea to have them sign a handbook acknowledgment form.
If possible, provide job training in more than one learning style. For instance, one employee may learn well from watching videos while another may need to actually perform a task in order to absorb the information. By providing training in multiple fashions, you are not only inclusive to a variety of learning styles, but you also help solidify the information in their mind.
HR and Other Important Contacts
Who can help your new hire with questions and situations that arise? This is vital information to include in your employee onboarding checklist. Information on who to call and where to find information is vital to the success of your new employee. Be sure to include instructions for how to file a complaint, request support and how to navigate vital software systems.
“I didn’t know a five-course meal was out of the question!” You don’t want to be hit with this statement when processing expense reports. Perhaps you are fortunate enough as a company to allow for such expenditures, however, it’s vital to clarify strict guidelines on your expense policy up front. Surprises in this form are never any fun.
