We are just starting out as a company and want to create an employee handbook. How do we get started?

The first step here would be taking a look at your company’s size and locations. This will help confirm what laws may apply to the group to ensure we include the required policies, like state-mandated sexual harassment or federal anti-discrimination.

After that, I would perform a thorough review of the draft handbook to see if there are any employment laws that may clash with specific policies – overtime, leave of absence, and time off policies are usually the trickiest, especially for companies with multiple locations.

Once complete, I would recommend the company have the handbook reviewed by an employment attorney to confirm full compliance.
