Hi Amanda,
Here are a few reasons why inclusion is critical to success and how you can prioritize it as a small business.
When it comes to your business strategy, building an inclusive culture is not only the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. Research by McKinsey revealed companies that adopt a systematic approach to inclusion are more successful than those that don’t. Yet, McKinsey also found just 29% of organizations had a positive response to the topic of inclusion.
We have to start by understanding what inclusion means. Representation of all backgrounds and cultures should be a foundation of how we think about our teams. Inclusion is about how you maintain that workforce. How do you motivate them and recognize that diverse workforce? How do you make sure employees know their work and ideas are valued?
Inclusion begins with recruiting diverse talent, but it can’t stop once employees are hired. Businesses need to create environments that provide employees with visibility, promotional opportunities, and a healthy culture that encourages feedback.
Small businesses can take several simple steps to continue to build an inclusive culture. Language tools, interview debriefs, intentional onboarding, and gathering feedback are particularly impactful and easy to implement.
The best way to drive progress is to learn from things you try. Inclusion isn’t one-size-fits-all, and you’ll likely make some mistakes. What matters is setting a clear vision and taking steps toward it.
